What is Tae Kwon Do?

Tae Kwon Do or Taekwondo is a Korean martial art. The name comes from Tae (foot), Kwon (fist) and Do (art, way of life), literally meaning "the art of hand and foot fighting". However, Tae Kwon Do is a defensive and not an offensive martial art.

Currently, Tae Kwon Do is practiced in over 158 countries with nearly 30 million practitioners registered with the World Tae Kwon Do Federation (WTF).

Tae Kwon Do as a Way of Life

Physical and self-defense training is a means to cultivate patience, self-confidence and self-discipline. It provides a sense of well being and the ability to defend oneself. Tae Kwon Do concentrates on the development of a strong mind and spirit.

All students are introduced to live by the tenets of Tae Kwon Do: "Courtesy", "Integrity", "Perseverance", "Self-Control (Discipline)" and "Indomitable Spirit (Fortitude)".

All students are introduced to life philosophies with the goal of establishing harmony with oneself and ultimately with others.

Sport Tae Kwon Do

Tae Kwon Do debuted as an Olympic sport in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Currently, Tae Kwon Do competitions are held at local, Collegiate (NCAA), State, National and International venues. Tae Kwon Do rise as a "martial sport" is driving it's popularity around the world.

Affiliations

Sparta is recognized by the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF), through our membership with USA Taekwondo (USAT). USA Taekwondo is new name for the National Governing Body for Taekwondo in the United States. Prior to the name change it was previously known as the United States Taekwondo Union (USTU). We are also members of the California Taekwondo Association (CTA).
