Rebuilding a Legacy of Discipline & Leadership

Team Sparta is the competition arm of Sparta Taekwondo: a small, selective group of athletes training to compete at state, national, and international tournaments. Built and coached by an Olympian and multiple National Team members, the program prioritizes discipline first and titles second. The most experienced competition Taekwondo team in Walnut Creek.

Grandmaster Geoffrey Uy

25+ Years Coaching · 7+ National Team Members Produced

With over 25 years of coaching experience, Grandmaster Uy has produced more than seven National Team Members and countless nationally and internationally ranked athletes. His coaching philosophy and competitive eye have consistently developed high-performing athletes and respected individuals, the reason Sparta Taekwondo became a nationally recognized name.

A 2x Olympian for the Philippines, World Cup Silver Medalist, Asian Games Silver Medalist, Asian Championships Silver Medalist, and 3x SEA Games Gold Medalist. Master Go has been at the heart of Team Sparta since 2011, preparing athletes for national and international stages with tactical expertise and world-class training regimes.

10x Philippine National Team · 2023 SEA Games Gold · Spain Open Gold

A 10x Philippine National Team Member, 2023 SEA Games Gold Medalist, Spain Open Gold Medalist, and 2x SEA Games Silver Medalist. Joined Sparta's coaching staff in 2023 after being awarded UAAP's Most Valuable Player, leading his team through an undefeated season in the Philippines' nation-wide collegiate competition. He brings the perspective of an internationally ranked athlete and the experience of a former head coach at National University and UC Davis.

5x USA National Team · 3x US Open Gold · 2x Pan Am Gold

A 5x USA National Team Member, 3x AAU National Team Member, 3x Collegiate Gold Medalist, 3x US Open Gold Medalist, and 2x Pan American Championships Gold Medalist. Trained under Grandmaster Uy and Master Go, and made National Team every year since joining Sparta. Master Lee focuses on strength and conditioning to build well-rounded athletes capable of executing at the highest level.

How the Year Works

We have redefined the year to allow an intentional Off-Season, giving athletes who want to make the team extra preparation time.
Competition Season

February – September

Exclusive training for official team members only. Elite-level sessions, tournament prep, and coaching intensives.

Off-Season

October – January

Open training. Non-members can train alongside the team to prepare for the upcoming February trials.

Track Workouts

On Belt Ceremony evenings, the team participates in a Special Track Workout. Members who test and want to receive their new belts during the ceremony may be exempted from the track workout that day. Details go out via the team newsletter and communication channels.

Mandatory Events

  • Tournaments: minimum of 3 per calendar year
  • Sparta Rumbles (March 14 and June 6)
  • Cross-trainings on the first Saturday of each month
  • Sparta Annual Intramural (September 12–13)
  • Annual February Trials (re-evaluation)

External Scrimmages

Athletes may attend scrimmages and rumbles at other schools with prior approval from Grandmaster Uy. These are encouraged but not mandatory: invitations are often last-minute. Sparta-hosted events always take priority. Outside attendance does not substitute for Team Sparta participation requirements.
