Tip Testing

Tip testing is a mini-exam held every 4 weeks between belt tests. Each tip a student earns represents mastery of a portion of their belt-rank curriculum (forms, kicks, etc.). Tips are required to qualify for the next belt test.

The 4-Week Cycle

  • Week 1: Sparring / General Training
  • Week 2: Poomsae
  • Week 3: Kicks
  • Week 4: Tip Test Week

Students not tip testing during Week 4 participate in a specialized review curriculum.

Tips Required by Belt Rank

Belt Level Tips Required Breakdown
White Belt 3 1st = Form  ·  2nd = 2nd Form  ·  3rd = Kicks
Yellow → Orange Advanced 2 1st = Form  ·  2nd = Kicks
Green Belt and above 3 1st = Form  ·  2nd = 2nd Form  ·  3rd = Kicks

Eligibility & Fees

  • Class minimum: 8 classes at the current belt and tip rank before the next tip test
  • Fee: No fee for tip tests
  • Awarding: Tips are awarded at the end of the tip testing class. Both passing and non-passing students receive feedback on their performance.

Belt Testing

Belt testing is held every 9 weeks and is how students earn their next rank. Each test covers forms (poomsae), kicks, and other curriculum requirements specific to the belt being tested for.

Belt Testing Schedule

The 9-week cycle runs as two back-to-back tip cycles plus a final review week:
  • Weeks 1–4: First Tip Testing Cycle
  • Weeks 5–8: Second Tip Testing Cycle
  • Week 9: Belt Test Review and Breaking Focus (also a review week for students not currently testing)

Eligibility

To qualify for belt testing, a student must:
  1. Have the required number of tips for their current belt rank
  2. Have the minimum number of classes attended
  3. Submit a completed Belt Testing Application form, which includes:
    • Parent’s permission to test (if the student is under 18)
    • Instructor’s signature granting permission to test (if the student is in grade 12 or below)

Fee Schedule

Rank Testing For Fee

Poom Belt $100

Late applications: A $20 late fee is applied to any application submitted after the deadline.

Refund & Retest Policy

  • All testing fees are final and non-refundable
  • If a student does not pass their promotion test, the fee for the first re-application is waived
  • If a student fails a second time, the full testing fee must be paid again for the third attempt

Belt Ceremony

Belt graduation is a time to celebrate. Students who pass their promotion test are awarded their new belts and certificates at this ceremony, and families are encouraged to attend the potluck celebration afterwards.

When: The first Friday after a promotion test.

Poomsae Videos

We teach both the Taegeuk and Palgwae form sets — 19 forms total — making our curriculum the most extensive in the East Bay. Every form is available as a video walkthrough plus a downloadable PDF reference, so students can practice at home or polish techniques before testing.

Form sets covered:
  • Taegeuk: Il Jang through Pal Jang (8 forms)
  • Palgwae: Il Jang through Pal Jang (8 forms)
  • Keecho: Il Jang and Ee Jang (2 forms)

Also awarded for improving one letter grade in at least two subjects while maintaining all others (deportment grades must be satisfactory). Submit a copy of the report card to be eligible.
