About Us

Our Vision

Sparta Taekwondo

Founded in 2004 in Walnut Creek, California, Sparta Taekwondo was built on one vision: to produce not just champions in the ring, but champions in life.

For over 20 years, Sparta has developed students of all ages and has ingrained the fundamentals of martial arts through a challenging curriculum in a supportive, family-oriented environment. This environment has helped them become better leaders who tackle life’s hardest challenges with a positive attitude.

The Foundation

Our Philosophy

We believe Taekwondo is more than kicks and forms. It’s a success system for building great character. Every class integrates the five tenets of Taekwondo:
  • Courtesy — Treating others with respect. At home: bowing, “yes sir/ma’am,” holding the door for a sibling.
  • Integrity — Doing the right thing when no one is watching. At home: telling on themselves when they break something.
  • Perseverance — Pushing through challenges. At home: finishing the homework problem instead of shutting the laptop.
  • Self-Control — Managing emotions and actions. At home: walking away from a sibling fight instead of escalating it.
  • Indomitable Spirit —  Self-talk that refuses to give up. At home: trying the hard thing one more time.
These principles extend beyond the classes and into everyday life: at school, at work, and at home.

Why Sparta Taekwondo?

Building Character and Leaders in a Distracted Age

Parents often notice it first in how confidently their child walks into a room. Then in how they handle difficulties. Later in how they speak to a teacher.

Most children today get too much screen time and not much practice with the habits that build real confidence: finishing hard things, showing up on a bad day, and staying composed while performing in front of others. Sparta Taekwondo teaches all of that intentionally.

That has been our focus for over 20 years. We don’t run a belt factory. Each session puts your child through small tests of focus, respect, and grit. Over time, those habits stop being “class behavior” and start becoming who your child is.

All of our instructors are Kukkiwon-certified (Official governing body of Taekwondo in Korea). We teach both the Taegeuk and Palgwae poomsae sets, while most East Bay schools teach only one, and several of our coaches competed nationally and internationally before they began teaching here. A black belt at Sparta takes years of consistent work, and we pride ourselves in not handing out belts or participation trophies.
